Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Singba Rhodendron Sanctuary is located towards the North of Sikkim, in the famous Lachung Valley, 137 Km from Gangtok. Situated at an altitude of 3048-4575 m, the sanctuary is bounded on its South by the Yumthang Valley, which is famous for its alpine meadows and hot springs. Towards the East of the sanctuary is the ragged Chuba - Sagochen mountain range, whereas towards the West, Singba is bordered by the Chomzomei Tso, which extends up to the Lava pass. This 43 Sq. Km sanctuary is world famous for its abundance growth of Rhododendron shrubs and trees. Almost 40 varieties of Rhododendron have been recorded from the Singba sanctuary.

Landscape & Climate

The Yumthang Chu River flows through the Yumthang Valley. The landscape of this valley is simply breathtaking. The hills are covered with lush green bushes & flowering plants whereas high peaks are covered with snow.

Being close to the Tibetan Plateau, the entire valley witnesses long winter seasons. January is the coldest month, though, chillness in the weather sets in the month of November itself. This pattern continues up to the month of February. During this entire period the valley receives heavy snowfall which further enhances its beauty. Between the months of August and September the valley is almost inaccessible due to the heavy monsoon rains.

Flora in Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Singba Sanctuary has rich natural vegetation cover comprising of a variety of trees and plants. Though the chief attraction of the sanctuary are the Rhododendron shrubs & trees, various other floral varieties like Saxifrages, Potentillas, Aconites, Primulas, Poppies and Gentians are also commonly sighted. In the months of April & May the entire valley is covered with bright colors of blossomed Rhododendron flowers.

Best Time to Visit:

Best time to visit this sanctuary is from March to May and from October to December. The sanctuary can be reached by a 7 Hr journey from the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok.

Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Shingba sanctuary provides shelter to a large variety of animal population like Tigers, Common Hill Partridges, Gorals, Blood Pheasant, Serows and many more. The endangered Spotted Linsang or Tiger-Civet has also been reported from this sanctuary. In addition to this, the Brown Trout fish which was introduced in the Yumthang Chu River in 1978 has been continuously flourishing here since then.
